Significance level  alpha (α)

« Back to Glossary Index

A measure used to determine the likelihood of a type I error.

Significance level  alpha (α) is expressed through p-value. A p-value ≤ 0.05 shows the effect, or winning finding, is significant and not highly likely due to a type I error.

Significance level  alpha (α) is not to be confused with statistical significance, even though they both use the word significance. They are two separate concepts.
