How To Install Google Tag Manager for WordPress

Overview:

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a powerful tool in the optimization platform. In these step-by-step tutorials, you’ll be walked through the exact process you need to install Google Tag Manager (GTM) on a WordPress site. You’ll learn the process, tools, or plugins you need to make installation seamless. Plus, how to verify the tracking code is installed properly and working.

Installing GTM on WordPress:

If your website is on WordPress, you have a couple options you can choose to install GTM.

You can either install GTM:

  • Directly within the website theme
  • By using a plugin

Prerequisites – Admin Access:

In order to install GTM on a WordPress site, you’ll need either to have administrative access to the WordPress site, or be in contact with someone who has admin access and can give you access, or can do the installation for you.

Considerations:

There are a couple considerations which may impact how you decide to install GTM:

  • Website theme – if you modify a theme, your changes can get lost if you later update, upgrade, or change your theme.
  • Plugin – gets around the problem of modifications made if you update your theme, which is advantageous. Plugins can be free. However, for more advanced features, you might have to pay. The recommended option is to use a Header/Footer plugin because it gives you the most flexibility.

For eCommerce sites

  • If your store is set-up with another WordPress Plugin – install a paid GTM plugin to best manage your eCommerce.
  • If you’re using another solution without a plugin – contact a GTM consultant.

Plugin Installation:

If you choose to use a plugin, it’s suggested you either go with a header/footer plugin, or GTM-specific plugin.
